Self Worth + Self Advocacy = Value Series
Ann Marie Houghtailing is my mentor turned close friend and colleague. She has served as the confidential advisor to some of the country’s most influential leaders and organizations. I enlisted her help to grow and sustain my business and it is here that my devotion to supporting others in building equity was born.
With funding from the Legler Benbough Foundation and through a collaborative partnership between RISE and the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences, we have received a grant to teach the crucial skills that have the potential to create generational wealth and improve the financial legacy of Southeast San Diego.
Our goal is to help our participants/advocates secure an additional $1 million in income from advocating for themselves by the end of 2019. Thus far, our 37 attendees have secured over
$153, 702 +
In addition to greater income and salary increases, participants have also negotiated for: Tuition Reimbursement to the value of $275,000 +, flexible Work schedules, placed on promotion path, doubled their consulting rates, and made strategic lateral moves to different departments. All of this was done in 2 hours of training.
The Story Sanctuary
The program roots itself in the truth that “each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done” (Bryan Stevenson, Founder of Equal Justice Initiative). Donovan residents already have an identity ascribed, “prisoner”, “inmate”, “felon”, “life sentence”, our work explores identity construction; who are we and, most importantly, who do we want to be? This allows participants to identify, refine, work through, and prepare a personal story of their choosing that will be delivered/performed for outsiders. This project is the culmination of two years of work. Our first performance is tentatively scheduled late Summer of 2019 pending the Warden’s approval.
